Devout readers of historical works, especially biographies, will not dismiss the in-depth and incredibly detailed works of Ron Chernow, Stacy Schiff, or Winston Groom. Certainly, Chernow’s masterpiece “Grant” published in 2017 is on a completely different level than any of the books in the O’Reilly/Dugard series. However, one thing the Reilly/Dugard books have is that they are “entertainingly readable” and loaded with what one might consider “historical tid-bits” that help to tell the story. The style of the books all have a similar method of telling a larger story through various short stories. The stories are
sometimes inter-connected with each other, but many times they are stand-alone segments
that help give the reader some perspective going forward. The books are hard to put down once
you get into the various segments.
The Killing Series
There are 13 Killing books in the series, the first is “Killing Lincoln” in 2011 and the last is “Killing
the Witches” in 2023. I’ve read them all and there is no favorite. I purchase the books as soon
as they become available, and I read them in less time than any other book of their size. They
are that readable. The authors have suggested that the Killing series is complete, and they are
now moving on to the “Confronting” series.
Confronting the Presidents
The first of such a series would be “Confronting the Presidents.” The authors take a look at the
presidencies of Washington through Obama, giving an afterword to both Trump and Biden. The
authors rightly point out that neither of the two presidents have finished shaping their legacies
so their synopsis is incomplete. Having that said, after a few short months into the second
Trump term, I’d be willing to bet the authors would like to have a “do-over” on their thoughts
about both Biden and Trump.
The Authors
The team of Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard has proven to be a successful blend of talents.
O’Reilly is a conservative talk host who is best known for his number one rated O’Reilly Factor
on the Fox News channel while Martin Dugard is a professional author and a lifelong registered
democrat. Together they have put together a series of historical works that offer educational
reading for any interested reader. All the books are readable for almost all age levels.
