In October 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme court heard arguments over Governor Evers’ ability to edit legislation as he pleases with the power of a partial veto. His creative vetoing allowed for an increase in school spending for the next 400 years. Wisconsin Governors are granted some of the broadest veto powers in the country. Although these powers have recently been reduced, they can still be used in ways that erase your vote. Evers has gathered enough executive strength to essentially eliminate the need for a legislature.
The “Frankenstein Pen” legislation would allow the governor to unilaterally create a budget without the oversight of the legislature. If the Wisconsin Supreme Court upholds the partial veto power Governor Evers granted himself, it would, in essence, make him a king. Because bills and budgets must be sent to the Governor for a final vote, he would have the ability to edit and manipulate them without any checks or balances.
The power of the purse belongs to the legislature. This institution was created by our Founding Fathers to be the closest branch of government to the people. The executive branch was only tasked with either approving or vetoing budgets. The Wisconsin Supreme Court and its newest addition, Justice Protasiewicz, seem fixated on serving a liberal agenda. They have repealed drop box laws without any precedent, re-litigated Act 10 after the United States Supreme Court affirmed its legitimacy and are now allowing the Governor the power to change the state budget as he pleases. A fair and balanced Judicial branch is essential to the survival of a healthy republic. It is crucial to vote on April 1, or else Wisconsin will become the victim of tyrannical Executive and Judicial branches who will steal the power from the people they are supposed to serve.
Fair courts foster justice, which is crucial for maintaining integrity in our democracy. Without a trustworthy State Supreme Court, Wisconsinites will become mere subjects of a self-serving Governor who wants to be king. Plan to get out and vote for Brad Schimel on April 1, for you, your family and the next generation.
