The mission statement for the Wisconsin Conservative Digest is fairly short and sweet.
We are dedicated to expanding the Conservative movement within Wisconsin through education while promoting conservative solutions to the issues that affect Wisconsin’s families.
Our goals as of late are also fairly simple. The WCD wants a fair process of vetting and choosing our candidates and elected officials. We don’t want billionaires selecting our candidates and dictating from the top down.
For the last few decades, the members who make up the conservative wing of the republican party have been ignored by the party leaders, and it appears that those leaders are willing to take extreme measures to keep the conservative voice from being heard. I would think that everyone right of center would want to see some REAL LEADERSHIP in Wisconsin.
Who can’t get behind the WCD? Let’s talk about it.

Why Bother?
What is the purpose of the in-fighting and door knocking and money spent when the people we end up sending to Madison don’t provide any measurable results whatsoever. I don’t get it. The budget has exploded, industries destroyed, the Pro-Life message abandoned and the latest is that Vos will pass an energy bill that will significantly raise energy prices on Wisconsin’s families, and most of these “Republican” legislators will stand by and watch.
Republicans Don’t Get Wins:
Or at least we haven’t seen a win in a while. Spending has gone up and the size and scope of government has increased. Our election process is corrupt, and the governor has gone rouge. If we don’t win on April 1st we might as well all go home.
800,000 Sportsmen Don’t Vote?
I keep hearing these extremely troubling numbers about Wisconsin sportsmen not voting. I can’t speak to what the actual numbers are, but Scott Pressler who leads efforts to get out the vote reported that 40% of hunters in Wisconsin aren’t registered to vote. That’s enough votes to have won every election we’ve ever had. Why don’t they vote? I can speak to that. I’ve been a bar owner for decades and I can tell you what I hear. “Why should I vote?” They are all the same, nothing ever gets better. Politicians are corrupt and I won’t support any of them. Certainly, looking at the “proof is in the pudding” for the past few budget cycles you’d think democrats were in charge of both houses of the legislature. We need to give people something to vote for.
Evangelicals Don’t Vote:
For years the republican establishment has been trying to get devout Christians to the polls. There are many reasons that certain groups of people don’t vote. Most Christians I know do vote. However, I can tell you that a main reason that a Christian would vote is to protect the sanctity of life, which no longer is a reason to vote republican thanks to a misguided and corrupt leadership team. The WCD will continue to point out that the republican support of a 14- week abortion bill has not gained us one voter anywhere.
Quantity over Quality: Bob Donovan
Lately it seems that every time I research a bad bill or vote, Bob Donovan’s name pops up. After thinking about it for a while, I came up with a theory. It’s a popular syndrome that seems to have penetrated the party including the common republican voter. It’s the quantity over quality mind set and in the last decade, we have paid a price for it. Example one is Robin Vos as speaker. Our inside sources say that we were one vote away from sidelining Robin Vos. Vos needed 50 votes and with 54 republican reps we need five no votes to get a new speaker, and we had four (although only two voted no, there were two others that would have voted no if a fifth no vote could be found). Bob Donovan was the 50th vote. So, when we cheer about how so many people worked their butts off and got Bob Donovan elected, what we are saying is we worked hard to send a guy to Madison who voted for Vos for speaker, supports Red Flag Laws, and supports legislation like “The Right of First Refusal.” Can someone tell me how THAT is win?
RPW & TPA, where’s the difference?
My message to both Turning Point Action and the Republican Party of Wisconsin. Nothing will replace a strong grassroots “we the people” effort. Nothing.
I have spent 20 years working within what you would call the RPW machine. The expectations were simple. You WILL espouse the positions you’re told to espouse; you will support the people you’re told to support, and you will fall in line and remain in lockstep, or you will be absolutely admonished by the party mechanism. Legislators will be drummed out of the caucus and staff will be blackballed.
We all know what happens to those that don’t fall in line. The swamp, otherwise known as the RPW, is funded and backed by billionaires and Washington operatives. It has become painfully clear that the entity known as Turning Point Action (TPA) is a carbon copy. They are also funded by billionaires and backed by DC operatives; and they travel in lockstep. And there’s no room for dissention. And the TPA members are WELL-PAID. Who here thinks that there’s any chance that a paid employee is going to give up their paycheck to give a grassroots candidate a fair shake? I’ll wait.
When someone says that the WCD’s goals are not their goals, then one needs to take notice. At the WCD neither the publisher nor yours truly, the editor, travel in party circles. We don’t care who is “in charge” or who has what title. The WCD is looking for results. We want lower taxes, less spending, less government intrusion and more personal responsibility. We want to protect babies and provide economic prosperity through free market principles. The proof is in the pudding. The RPW doesn’t care about any of those things, they only care about money and power. The recent budget trends and other shortcomings are proof positive. However, it is perfectly clear TPA is hauntingly parallel to RPW. Except the RPW billionaires are in Wisconsin. If making Wisconsin better isn’t YOUR goal, then we are not the same.
The Problem with the Republican Party of Wisconsin (RPW)
- The RPW is funded by billionaires and Washington operatives and thus is clearly, by definition a top-down party.
- The RPW put their fingers on the scale in primary and party elections.
- The RPW leaders are in lockstep when it comes to policies. No dissension is allowed.
- The RPW chooses winners and losers. The DATA they gather is only available to their “chosen” candidates.
- The RPW is nothing more than a good “old boy” club.
