Charlie Kirk was unceasingly attacked for many of his statements, by the media establishment and supposed intellectuals whose exchanges with Charlie revealed the sad truth that they had been taught what to think but were thoroughly confused when Charlie led them step-by-step in how to think. One of his oft repeated statements-and just as often criticized-was that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, which statement Charlie supported with many historical facts.

But first, what does it mean when we say, “America was founded as a Christian nation”? I believe there are two aspects to that statement. One-that the beliefs and principles of our founding documents are based on Scripture. Two-that the majority of our founding fathers were believers and well educated on the Holy Scriptures to the point that their thoughts, writings and political philosophies were reflective of the Scriptures.
Volumes have been written on this subject, and we have not recently discovered a new historical document supporting ours and Charlie’s assertions! So, we will just touch on a few of the pertinent facts that researchers and scholars have verified. Some of these have been shared with audiences by Charlie, some I am not aware of his mentioning in any forum.
Our first assertion: the beliefs and principles of our founding documents are based on Scripture. The first governing document of colonial America was the Mayflower Compact. It included the statement of their purpose ““for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith.” This philosophy continued from the founding documents of the colonies, which required a declaration of faith to serve in elected office, to the founding document of our current government-the Declaration of Independence. As Charlie has mentioned, God is referenced four times in the document, and it closes with a prayer. One (of many that we could include) additional fact is that the idea of three branches of government comes from the Bible. The prophet Isaiah wrote: “For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.”
The second aspect: most of the founding fathers were well versed on Biblical principles and that is reflected in their beliefs, writings, and philosophy of government. One crucial. foundational principle was the sin nature of mankind. Of course, this is contradictory to the oft proclaimed current philosophy that man is basically good. From the Bible:
- Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one”, a quotation from the Psalms.
- Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.
From the founding fathers: In the federalist papers, James Madison wrote of the “infirmities and depravities of the human character” and Alexander Hamilton wrote of “the depravity of human nature”. Thomas Jefferson is quoted as saying, ““In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the constitution.”
Charlie Kirk was correct in his belief and assertion that we were founded as a Christian nation.
